Our Proud and Rich history

The Albanian Muslim Society of Toronto (AMST) is a cornerstone of Canada’s Islamic and Albanian heritage. Founded in 1957 by Albanian immigrants, AMST played a pivotal role in establishing Toronto’s first mosque — a modest leather shop on Dundas Street transformed by a devoted, multicultural group of Muslims into a sacred place of worship and unity. Under the leadership of Regip Assim, AMST became a beacon for Muslims seeking faith, community, and purpose in a new land.

As Toronto’s Muslim population grew, so did the community’s needs. In response, the Society helped move the mosque to a larger space—the building that became the now well-known Jami Mosque. Although the community would eventually branch into cultural groups with their places of worship, the Albanian Muslim Society of Toronto remained unwavering in its commitment to serving its members and preserving its faith, culture and heritage.

Today, AMST continues to thrive as an inclusive and vibrant mosque rooted in Islamic values and Albanian culture. Our mission, which we hold dear, is to serve Albanian-Canadian Muslims’ religious, educational, and social needs across the Greater Toronto Area. Through prayer services, youth programs, educational initiatives, and cultural events, we are not just preserving our faith and culture, but also nurturing a new generation of Muslims who are proud of their faith, confident in their identity, and fully engaged as citizens of Canada.

With a legacy built on unity, service, and perseverance, the Albanian Muslim Society of Toronto looks forward to the future with purpose — honouring the sacrifices of our founders and strengthening our contributions to Canada’s diverse and dynamic Society. We are proud of our role in promoting intercultural understanding and harmony, and we will continue to work towards a more inclusive and united Canada.
